GARY’S COMMENTS ABOUT THE MUSICIANS

Paul Revelli: Paul and I play together in Angela’s band and NRPS. No worries when Paul’s on the gig! Simply one of the best.

Steve Evans: One of my oldest buddies in the business. I can’t imagine anyone I’d rather work with. He always delivers the goods.

Both these guys have it all; professionalism, chops, and above all, dedication to the groove.

David Kessner: Not only did David produce the CD and engineer the overdubs, he handled piano and organ on 6 songs. David’s one of those guys who searches for, and finds the perfect part. He’s all about supporting the song. We really think alike when it comes to arranging and producing.

Jim Pugh:
Jim’s one of those rare talents who plays from the hip with an encyclopedic vocabulary on both piano and Hammond B3. I’m always thrilled by his ability to communicate a sense of passion and excitement both live and in the studio.

Louis Aissen: One of my musical brothers. Louis, who’s also mastered guitar and flute, was my only choice for organ and sax on “Grant Me the Green”. Take equal parts virtuosity, soul, creativity, and a love for music in all its forms, and cook em’ up together and you have “The Ace”.

Elvin Bishop: Consummate showman/ bandleader, master gardener, scholar, husband, father…….here’s a guy I’ve admired for years. He graciously agreed to take a shot at “Little Bit O’ Butter” and nailed it. He brings that deep blues feel to whatever he does. It’s a privilege to have him as part of the project.

Mike Rose (trumpet & horn charts) and Rob Zuckerman (tenor and baritone saxes): These guys play with Cold Blood and they’re tight. We had a blast working with them and hope to use them on some of the live shows.

Terry Hanck: One of my old compatriots from Elvin’s band. Terry’s a great showman/ singer/ bandleader and I love the way he “dances” over 24-7.

“The Ace”: Yep, that’s Louis overdubbing a sax solo on “Grant Me The Green”.

Norton Buffalo: Virtuoso technique, huge tone, great feel; I love the way Norton approaches ballads on the harmonica. His sound is unique and unmistakable. Thanks Norton!

Maria Muldaur: Another one of my ex-employers who agreed to lend her support. “When The Lights Go Out” was right up her alley and she flew through the session. Check her out on the short cadenza at the end of the tune.

Angela Strehli: I’ve been in the Angela Strehli Band now for about 5 years. She’s the best and the real deal when it comes to blues singers. She sings straight from the heart and it moves me every time!

Ann Jefferson: Ann comes out of the gospel world. I don’t think she’d ever done a Rock and Roll session before. She layered her parts perfectly, usually on the first take. We were lucky to have found her. Thanks for a great job Ann!

Chris Manning: Formerly a bass player, Chris engineered the basic tracks and mixed the final product. Chris’s huge musical ears and attention to detail made the mixing sessions a pleasure. He came highly recommended and didn’t disappoint.

Thanks to all who helped with this project. It was a labor of love from the beginning and we’re grateful to every one of you! GV
